Recent climate driven legislation in NYC and other jurisdictions that regulates building emissions and implements fossil fuel limits is pushing buildings to move away from fossil fuels as a heating and hot water source.  The HVAC industry is responding to these new regulations and the urgency of climate change.  This presentation will talk about the process of designing a new building or major retrofit in the world of regulated emissions.  We will walk through the design process, identifying the main drivers for different clients and how to select the right HVAC system; showing impacts of fossil fuel vs. efficient electric.  We will then use two recent student residence cases studies; a new state of the art graduate student housing project for Weill Cornell Medical College and a 100 year old landmarked dormitory for NYU, to examine design impacts of a fossil fuel free building, available technologies, lessons learned during design and possible future design considerations.
