There will be a Q & A box for submitting questions, which will be answered by the presenting entities.

The webinar will be recorded for future viewing and posted on the ASHRAE website.

Speakers:

Emily Hoffman is the Director of the Office of Building Energy and Emissions Performance at the NYC Department of Buildings, where she leads the implementation of key climate and sustainability laws, including Local Law 97, Benchmarking, Energy Grades, and Energy Audits. She previously led NYC’s Energy Code team and contributed to national standards, including the 2024 IECC, ASHRAE 90.1, and NYSERDA’s Stretch Code. Emily has been recognized as an NYC Climate Hero and received the Energy Professional Development of the Year award from the Association of Energy Engineers in both 2019 and 2020. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis.

Jean Kim serves as the Deputy Director of Building Energy and Emissions Audits at the NYC Department of Buildings. As a core member of the Department’s Local Law 97 implementation team, she has played a critical role in developing the operational procedures, platforms, and tools necessary to administer the law and streamline existing sustainability regulations. Drawing on her experience leading the implementation of the NYC Energy Conservation Code across the 2014, 2016, and 2020 versions, Jean now leads the team of building energy and emissions auditors overseeing enforcement of Local Law 97 and related NYC sustainability initiatives.

Prior to joining the Department, Jean held executive roles in the private sector, directing award-winning architectural firms in New York City and abroad. She is a Registered Architect, Certified Energy Manager, LEED AP BD+C, and Certified Passive House Designer.

Thomas Carpenito is a Project Manager at the Department of Building's Office of Buildings Energy and Emissions Performance working to build out the reporting platform (BEAM) for Local Law 97. Before joining the department nearly a year ago, Thomas was the energy specialist at Pace University working to lower energy use at their New York City Campus. His main goal is to improve the user experience in BEAM and increase communicate with the public on Local Law 97.
